Diabetic??

I should start with this pass Monday....I had taken my glucose test back in June, when I came home to visit with Aaron while he was on his business trip and the day we got homefrom Hampton Rds, I received the call from my doctors office that my 1 hour glucose test was elevated. sigh....so now I have to take the 3 hour and my doctor wanted me to come take it as soon as possible. Aaron wanted me to follow up with a Doctor up here in NOVA( of course I have been on the doc hunt anyway) between trying to get an appointment as a new patient and getting my medical records from the Chesapeake office, that was next to impossible. The lady at the new office I was trying to get in with here in Dumfries, told me she would call when she got the medical records from my M.D. office. A week passed....and I called to see what was going on, because I know people are busy, offices are busy but I wanted to know because I needed to be seen. 1) because I was 30 weeks at this point and the clock is ticking and 2 ) I now need to follow up with someone quickly because of this elevated test, which was causing a little concern. The woman at the new office here said they had been having some issues with there phones and even if they got a fax it did not come thru because of the there phones being down. She also told me if she had not call me that meant that my records was not there and not to call back. I was like =:O , NEXT !!!

I came up with an idea to see if maybe I could go do my 3 hour glucose at a lab near by where I live instead of driving back to Hampton Rds. Called my Docs in Chesapeake they said that sounded great. This pass Monday I went to have my 3 hour glucose test done. You have to be on a special diet for 3 days and no eating after midnight the end of the 3rd day. The 4th day you have your blood drawn. Well, off I went Monday to do that. I had to have my blood drawn 4 times- The first one was for fasting and the other 3 were to check my glucose levels. After the first draw, I felt like I was going to literally pass out. When I came back in the nurse asked me how I felt and I told her- nauseous. She said try to keep it in because if you throw up we will have to start all over again. Well, I did my best and made it thru. I passed the time by going thru the baby name book, I made it to the letter "M". Pretty impressive considering I have not even made an attempt to really look thru it since I've been pregnant and I'm only 8 months starting.

Well, after the test was done I went to Taco Bell to get something to eat because I was afraid I would not make it home. I made it. I got my results back on Wednesday and I do indeed have Gestational Diabetes. :( First time out of the 4 pregnancies. I 've been telling Aaron it is so weird because this is the first pregnancy that my cravings have not even been any thing sugar related craving. Haven't really been feeling chocolate, candies or sweets at all. I was definitely like that with the girls but not with this baby at all. Reading up on it though that does not seem to be what causes it per-se.

What cause it is: ( babycenter) What is gestational diabetes?

This is a type of diabetes that some women get during pregnancy. Between 2 and 10 percent of expectant mothers develop this condition, making it one of the most common health problems of pregnancy.

Diabetes is complicated, but in a nutshell it means you have abnormally high levels of sugar in your blood. Here's what happens:
When you eat, your digestive system breaks most of your food down into a type of sugar called glucose. The glucose enters your bloodstream and then, with the help of insulin (a hormone made by your pancreas), your cells use the glucose as fuel. However, if your body doesn't produce enough insulin – or your cells have a problem responding to the insulin – too much glucose remains in your blood instead of moving into the cells and getting converted to energy.
When you're pregnant, hormonal changes can make your cells less responsive to insulin. For most moms-to-be, this isn't a problem: When the body needs additional insulin, the pancreas dutifully secretes more of it. But if your pancreas can't keep up with the increased insulin demand during pregnancy, your blood glucose levels rise too high, resulting in gestational diabetes.
Most women with gestational diabetes don't remain diabetic after the baby is born.

In a nutshell.

My doctor wants me to go see a diabetes counselor and they are setting that appt up for me, So I will be making a quick trip home to Hampton rds I suspect this week. I will more than likely have to manage and check my blood sugar during the day.

So here is my cause of concern and I could use prayer , it's not about me I'm just more concerned about Baby boy Button: (babycenter) -

If your blood sugar levels are too high, too much glucose will end up in your baby's blood. When that happens, your baby's pancreas needs to produce more insulin to process the extra glucose. All this excess blood sugar and insulin can cause your baby to put on extra weight, particularly in the upper body.
This can lead to what's called macrosomia. A macrosomic baby may be too large to enter the birth canal. Or the baby's head may enter the canal but then his shoulders may get stuck. In this situation, called shoulder dystocia, your practitioner will have to use special maneuvers to deliver your baby.

Shortly after birth, your baby may have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) because his body will still be producing extra insulin in response to your excess glucose. This is much more likely if your blood sugar levels were high during pregnancy and especially during labor.

In severe cases of hypoglycemia, though, he'll be given an IV glucose solution. Testing your baby's blood sugar and providing an IV if necessary can prevent serious problems such as seizures, coma, and brain damage that might result if the condition were to go unnoticed.
Your baby may also be at higher risk for breathing problems at birth, particularly if your blood sugar levels aren't well controlled or you deliver early (the lungs of babies whose mothers have diabetes tend to mature a bit later). The risk of newborn jaundice is increased, too.

These are my concerns but I think if I manage it well, then everything will be alright. And most importantly God is in control but when things like this happen you always have a cause for concern. I'll keep my blog updated with what happens after my appt, with the counselor.

  1. Thank you for sharing this, I will definitely pray! I'm glad doctors are able to diagnose things the way they do these days so you know what is going on and how to take care of yourself and baby. Praying for you both!!! Love and hugs! Gina
